Have you often wondered what really makes these outback towns tick? Over our many years of outback travel, we have discovered that a visit to the local watering hole is an authentic way of getting to know the locals and their home territory.
In 2022, we re-introduced our ANZAC Day and Outback Pubs Tour to give a select group of adventurers a unique Aussie Outback Experience. Our accommodation is strictly camping and will range from bush sites with limited facilities to sites out the back of pubs, or in Caravan Parks with full facilities. Self-catering is the go however there will be many opportunities for an adult refreshment and a decent pub meal. This itinerary includes a poignant ANZAC Day Service in the opal fields and visits to a minimum of 25 unique “Outback Pubs” many of which, are full of history and quirky memorabilia.
Driving time is provided as a basic guide however road conditions and the duration of breaks each day, will determine the actual time on the road between camps.
After making your own way to Kamarooka Tourist Park St George, the guides will conduct a briefing to answer all those last-minute questions. The Kamilaroi Centre, Cacti Garden, River Walk, Unique Egg, and the Old Gaol, as well as Cobb & Co Hotel, where we may have an evening meal, are all worth your consideration.
Our first stop of the morning will be at Bollon, where a scenic stroll along the river or a visit to The Bollon Hotel may appeal. We will aim to arrive in Cunnamulla with ample time to visit the Cunnamulla Fella Centre, Hotel Cunnamulla, and take a lunch break. Eulo is home to the Diprotodon and several quirky attractions such as the Lizard Racing Track. We camp behind the classic Eulo Queen Hotel in a well-appointed Caravan Park
From Eulo we head towards the QLD/NSW border, where we need to pass through a gate in the Dingo Fence. Hungerford is a small outback town, known for the iconic Royal Mail Hotel, built in 1875. We cross into NSW and take the track to Wanaaring where there is a store and fuel. We complete the journey to the Granits Caravan Park in Tibooburra in good time to explore the main street and visit two classic outback pubs.
We drive to Cameron's Corner this morning to check out the pub and surroundings. On the way we pass through open gibber plains and contrasting landscapes and experiences. We stay a second night in Tibooburra,
At Milparinka, we can visit the Albert Hotel 1882, and we plan to arrive at The Packsaddle Roadhouse in time for lunch. The road then passes through Fowlers Gap and we complete the day’s adventure with our arrival in Broken Hill, where the spectacular Palace Hotel 1889 is well worth a visit. We spend two nights in the well-appointed Broken Hill Tourist Park.

There is so much to see and do in Broken Hill that we have allowed a full day to take in highlights such as the numerous heritage buildings including pubs & former pubs, Pro Hart’s Gallery and the Living Desert Sculptures. The 20min drive to Silverton to view the quirky township with its movie memorabilia and Silverton Hotel is a definite highlight.
We head to Wilcannia for the opportunity to view colonial architecture including the Artheneum Library and the Post Office 1880. The Wilcannia Club Hotel 1875 is a blast from the past and the local art may be of interest. We finish at Shindy’s Inn, Louth where we bush camp beside the river and have access to showers & toilets opposite the pub. We will enjoy a great pizza meal here.
With a short drive to Bourke, there is plenty of time to explore the rich aboriginal and colonial culture of this charming town. You might enjoy an informative walk along the banks of the Darling River or a wander around the main street to view the historic buildings The Post Office Hotel 1888 and the Port of Bourke are two outback pubs worth visiting. We will meet at 1pm to complete our afternoon with a visit to Brewarrina, to view, among other things, the amazing aboriginal fish traps. For the next three nights, we camp in the grounds of Sheepyard Inn in the Opal fields, where hot showers and toilets are available.
The Sheepyard Inn was established around 1985 and has grown into a unique little outback hub serving groceries, gas, ice, coffee and cakes, homemade pizza, and fresh baked bread. Not to mention cold beer and a chance to meet welcoming, friendly locals. After a leisurely morning, we will visit Club in The Scrub and The Glengarry Hilton with plans for a pub lunch.
ANZAC DAY
Each year a poignant ANZAC Day March and ceremony is held at the Community War Memorial followed by a delicious gunfire breakfast by the scenic dam. Later in the morning, back up the track at Sheepyard Inn, a huge celebration and Two Up game gets underway. This must be one of the best ways ever to celebrate ANZAC Day as the authentic Aussie Spirit is on display and the atmosphere is buzzing.
