Atherton to The Tip to Mossman

Cape York is on most peoples bucket list. This trip gives you the opportunity to experience a diverse and exciting range of scenery and a variety of driving skills.
After our initial meeting and get to know your fellow passengers in Atherton we take thecMulligan Highway through Mareeba, Palmer River Roadhouse and through to the Development Road turn off.
We visit The Regional Cultural Centre and Hahn River Roadhouse. Stopping at Coen for a beer and last minute shopping. We stop at Meluna Station and drive through to Weipa where we have 2 nights to explore this mining town.
We look at the famous Telegraph track and watch as others experience Gunshot and Palm Creek.
We visit the iconic Crocodile tent to pick up souvenirs while on the way to the “Tip’.
We have an opportunity to visit Thursday and Horn Islands and may be able to fly back over the tip.
We visit historical gold mining sites and see some great scenery. We see Aboriginal art and have plenty of opportunity for photographs.
We visit Cooktown and call into the iconic Lions Den Pub. If the weather is right, we will drive the steep & iconic Creb track with its numerous creek crossings.
We drive the Bloomfield track and visit the Daintree while getting to Mossman gorge where we finish our trip.

Driving time is provided as a basic guide however road conditions and the duration of breaks each day, will determine the actual time on the road between camps.
After making your own way to Atherton, there will be a briefing at 4pm to meet your guides and fellow adventurers and ask all those last-minute questions.
Leaving Atherton, we head north and pass through the scenic farming land around Mareeba.The Mulligan Highway continues past the historic mining area of Mt Molloy and our first comfort stop at Palmer River Roadhouse, which is on the site of the Gold Rush in the 1870’s. Passing into Quinkan Country, we have an opportunity to visit the Regional Cultural Centre. Hann River Roadhouse provides an opportunity for fuel & food and then we head to our homestead camp for the night.
After leaving camp, we drive to Coen, where there will be time to visit the classic Exchange Hotel and gather any last-minute supplies. Archer River Roadhouse is a pleasant spot for a lunch break and then we continue to Merluna Station for the night where we will be treated to true country hospitality.
Leaving Merluna Station, we have a short drive day to Weipa. Taking the scenic Kerr Point Drive, we stop to visit the Western Cape Cultural Centre. There is an opportunity for a 4WD on the beach and time to look at Lake Patricia and Lake Mc Cleod where there are bird watching and picnic facilities. Camping for the next two nights is in a well-appointed caravan park with all modern conveniences. A Sunset boat tour is included on your first night in Weipa.
Exploring Weipa: This will be an opportunity to look around the town and take in various points of interest. A town and mine tour will be included on this day if avaiable. There is also an opportunity, with notice, for an optional fishing tour to be arranged or those who are interested could take a drive to New Mapoon, north of Weipa.
After having the morning to explore Weipa and/or replenish supplies, we will have a short drive day. We will cross the Wenlock River and have a comfort stop at Moreton Telegraph Station, which opened in 1887. Our camp for the night is at Bramwell Station, which has many modern facilities including a restaurant. Bramwell Station is the most northern Cattle station in Australia.
Bramwell Junction and Roadhouse, with its small museum and cafe is the last opportunity to fuel up before exploring parts of the Old Telegraph Track. There is an opportunity to view Palm Creek with its extremely eroded crossing, however the convoy will not be attempting it. We will drive the corrugated track to look at Gunshot Creek. We cross over Sailor Creek and head for Fruit Bat falls for a short walk and a well deserved refreshing swim. Next on the agenda is Scrubby Creek followed by a visit to both Eliot and Twin Falls. More swimming and site seeing and we stay the night here.
We drive to the Jardine Ferry Crossing. (The fare is included) From there it is a short drive to our beautiful campsite on the waterfront at Loyalty Beach.
The tour today includes a scenic drive via Punsand Bay and The Croc Tent, to “TheTip” for a short walk and an opportunity for those iconic photographs at Australia’s most Northern Point. We will also visit the historic settlement of Somerset and have a picnic lunch at the beach there. There may be an opportunity for a fish & chips meal at the campground during our stay.
There will be an option to embark on a tour of Thursday Island and Horn Island, which includes a ferry ride to and tour of TI, a further ferry to Horn Island with lunch and a tour of the WWII historic sites, returning by light plane over “TheTip” and back to Bamaga.
Exploring Seisia and Surrounds. There is a flexible itinerary today and there will be options for a drive to Muttee Heads, perhaps a fishing charter and time to explore the WWII plane wrecks located on tracks near Bamaga Airport. There will also be time to stock up on food & fuel supplies and maybe a visit to the Fishing Club and/or the local pub might appeal.
Heading back to the Jardine river we will cross on the ferry (included in fare) and there may be an option to revisit some of the majestic falls for another swim. We take a drive to the windy coastline at Captain Billy’s Landing and if the tide is with us, we will view the micro bats in their cave. There will be time for a walk along the beach and an opportunity to photograph the historic remnants of the old jetty. Our camp for the night is at the Moreton Bay Telegraph Station, where some short walks are available.
We drive towards Chilli Beach and have time for a short detour to check out remnants of the Batavia Goldfields. Depending on track conditions we will tackle the Pascoe River Crossing and then stop at Mt Tozer Lookout. We arrive in Chilli Beach for a two night bush camp.
There will be plenty of time to explore the historic settlement of Portland Roads and either picnic or indulge in an enjoyable lunch, (included in fare) on the deck of this remote local restaurant. Back at Chilli Beach there are opportunities to drive, walk and fish and hopefully the amazing flocks of metallic starlings will make an appearance as the sun goes down.
Leaving Chilli Beach, Next is a stop at the Archer River Roadhouse and then its back to Coen to stock up on supplies. The hotel, museum and murals are worth a look. We stay at Archer River Roadhouse tonight.
From Archer River we travel via Musgrave Station, into Lakefield National Park. We make stops to view Red & White Lily lagoons, the Old Breeza Homestead where the lagoon is teeming with birdlife. We travel through more of Lakefield National Park to visit the historic Old Laura Homestead with its excellent displays. We take the scenic Battle Camp Road to Hope Vale, replenish supplies before we proceed to our beautiful waterside camp at Elim Beach.
We take a scenic drive to Cape Bedford on a very soft and sandy track and there will be many opportunities to stop for photography and short walks. Today we also visit the Coloured Sands when the tide is appropriate.
From Elim Beach, we travel to Cooktown and a brief visit to Endeavour Falls can be included. We arrive early at Cooktown so there will be ample time to explore before setting up camp at a well-appointed caravan park with all the facilities you require for our two night stay.
Exploring Cooktown: There is plenty to do and see in Cooktown according to your own interests. Activities include coastal walks, fishing, The Botanical Gardens, Grassy Hill Lookout, Captain Cook Museum, the Musical Ship, grouper feeding at Cooks Landing Kiosk, fresh fish & chips and a range of shops, quirky pubs & clubs.
After more time to explore Cooktown, we detour to Archer Point, stop at Black Mountain Lookout, and have time to visit the iconic Lion’s Den Hotel at Helenvale. We then head to a caravan park in Ayton to set up camp and enjoys a huge communal campfire.
Creb Track: As long as it hasn’t been raining, we will drive the steep and scenic Creb Track with its numerous creek crossings. Next, we cross the shallow but wide, Daintree River and then stop at Daintree Village to explore. After lunch, we take the Daintree Ferry (included in fare) and head north on the Bloomfield Track back to camp.
We leave camp and head south back on the Bloomfield Track to explore Cape Tribulation. There will be time for numerous stops, including some short walks and an optional visit to the Daintree Discovery Centre of those who are interested. Our destination for the evening is Mossman Caravan Park which is located right next to the aquatic centre. It is also a short walk to the township, where there are opportunities to eat out.
Mossman is a great base to explore nearby Mossman Gorge and Port Douglas, Kuranda and Cairns are all less than 100km away.
