Fairly easy day today, we start heading east today towards Mary Kathleen Abandoned Township - our base camp for the next 3 nights. On arrival we will set up camp and spend the rest of the day exploring Mary Kathleen Township and the old Mary Kathleen Uranium Mine.
Today we spend the day exploring Mount Frosty Mine, Rigby Falls, Inkerman Mine, Wee MacGregor Mine, Ballara Tunnel, Fountain Springs, and Lady Jenny Mine area. We should get back to the campsite mid-afternoon, time to gather some firewood for tonight’s campfire.
Another easy day today, we drive west towards Mt Isa only about 32km, then we turn off and head north to Valley Mine, then Deighton Pass and stopping at the top of the range. We now start heading southeast back towards the highway and should be back at camp around lunchtime. This will leave plenty of time to self-explore the local area or just relax back in camp.
We are back on the black stuff all day today and passing through Cloncurry with a great opportunity to restock supplies & top up with fuel. We depart Cloncurry and arrive at lunchtime and take a few photos at the famous Walkabout Creek Hotel in McKinlay, and we keep heading southeast towards our overnight camp at the back of the Blue Heeler Hotel Kynuna, where Banjo Patterson first read his Waltzing Matilda. But before we get there we visit the Waltzing Matilda Billabong just south of the township.
At Kynuna we re-join the Diamantina River and follow it close to it’s source, our destination today is the iconic Middleton Hotel, as we meander through some cattle country before driving through the ranges where the Diamantina River starts. There is some beautiful sites along the way where we will stop to enjoy. On arrival at Middleton Hotel we set up camp across the road, before enjoying a drink at the pub, the Publican’s Stoney & Clara are just the best hosts you will ever find.
Sadly we leave Middleton Hotel today and head west again towards our overnight campsite at Old Cork Homestead via Makunda Hotel #5 site (9 Pillars of Cobb & Co), Cawnpore Lookout, crossing the Diamantina River for the last time at the Cluff Family Bridge. On arrival here we will setup camp and you can explore the Old Cork Homestead and the banks of the Diamantina River.
We depart and go pass the new Cork Station on our way to our last bush camp of this trip at Mayne River, but first we visit the Lark Quarry Dinosaur Trackways area. We stop at Mayne River and set up camp.
Getting away as early as possible we drive over Commissioner Mount Jump up, and then into Jundah where we stop to refuel & a bite to eat. Once everyone is right to go we head for Yaraka Hotel famous for its very friendly Emu’s and hospitality. It’s very important that we get here no later than 3.00pm, so we can catch the Yaraka Hotel Bus ride to view the best Sunset of the Trip. With so many new experiences and challenges encountered and new friendships made, it’s highly likely that we will recount some memories of our trip over a tasty meal provided at the pub on that final night.
